Chris,

This is not hard. I assume as a file server you want NFS or 
Win95/NT flavors.  Both are very doable with freebsd. Check out
the packages on the 2.2.5 release disks. 

NFS is setup in the normal way with a /etc/exports file.
Win95 server is setup with the samba package.
