You do realize that ppp -ddial _IS_ supposed to dial as soon as it's
invoked, right?  -ddial means that ppp will keep the modem connected all the
time, when connection is dropped, it is immediately re-dialed whether it's
needed or not.

If you only want to have the modem dial when there is a need for it, you
should be using ppp -auto.  Which the subject of your message implies you
were doing.
