I wouldn't worry about the drives either, provided the systems are packed
well...I have seen units that are on m obile productions trucks that travel
all across the country EVERY week- via truck! All drives in the system
NEVER had a problem- this includes little crappy IDE drives in a desktop
PC. So worry more about the logistics of things, and your systems should
travel "happy"

Well, I doubt if sync parks the drive heads, as this happens
automatically in all modern hard drives.

In all modern drives based on voice coil technology, the heads are
parked by virtue of removing power. This covers both IDE and SCSI
drives. I haven't seen a drive based on stepper motor technology in ten
years. These drives required a program to move the heads to a "parked"
position.

If the system is packed adequately, I wouldn't be concerned about
shipping damage to the hard drive.

Subject: FW: sync question

Hello,

First post here. I have a need to move 15 freebsd server over 1000
miles
in a very short period of time. Ie: 8 hours. We are going to charter
a
plane to accomplish this. I do not want to pull the harddrives out of
the
server if at all possible. So my question is this: Does sync(2) called
by shutdown(8) or halt(8) park the heads of the drive? I need to know
if
I should take the drives out or will they be safe enough in the server
if
the server packed good will survive the trip. My thinking is if the
heads
are parked then no harm no foul. Thanks in advance.
