This is something I'd like, and I'm willing to make an effort to
contribute if I can (I'll have to look at what's involved).

Unfortunately, Sharity Light is under the GPL (as is the Linux SMBFS),
so an SMB/CIFS filesystem would presumably have to be built from the
ground up.  Apart from the (expired) draft spec, any pointers to CIFS
resources which aren't restrictively licensed?
