i'm installing from the 4.1 iso from the freebsd site..and...i've tried with
the 4.0 iso image....64 megs of memory

will continue the combinations

Ed,

How much memory does your friends system have on it? I have not been
successful with a 4.1 install with less than 40 MB.   Do you have the
August 2000 version of the 4.1 disks? If you don't I would recommend
getting them from BSDi.  If you get the 4.1 powerpak you get Greg Lehey's
book with it.   Have you tried the install without a custom kernel?  You
can compile a custom one later.  I would just try a minimal install with
only ipV4.
