Another suggestion from Glen and Ed is to include the "counter"
in the subject line.  Perhaps the subject would go from:

'git: <hash> <summary>'

to:

'git <counter>:<hash> <summary>'

The <counter>:<hash> format is what mercurial uses FWIW, and seems
a sensible format to borrow.
