This has nothing to do with FreeBSD, btw; it's strictly a modem-modem
issue.

You changed your dialup pool. it sounds like and now you're tripping over
the v.80 tone.  Add some commas after the dial string to enforce a delay
so that the modem doesn't hear the tone.
