Just a thought.. why not have both?  Somebody mentioned /var as a better
machine-specific mount point than /etc--but /sbin is also used.
If it was /var/ there should at least be a softlink from /etc to lessen
confusion.  Regardless, it would not be a problem at all to check both
locations.. no?

Frankly, if I were to do things via NFS I would also have exported 'local'
without giving it a second thought.  'local' IMHO is the repository for
software systems outside the normal bounds of the standard OS install--not
necessarily the configurations.  I can live with local/etc/rc.d, but there
should still be an option for packages which are not necessarily something
you want to globally install--and are instead specific to one or a few
hosts (such as HTTPd).
