Possibly, the mistake here is to present the "custom" option as an install method at all. Given that "novice" walks you through the install steps but still allows you to do a customised install, it should perhaps be called "installation", the custom option should be changed to something like "maintenance" because really that's where it's useful in that you can go fix any bit of the system without having to walk through all the installation steps.
