It's a buffer of the last several messages printed by the kernel. If you get lots of kernel messages you'll notice that the top will `scroll off' the buffer. Note that the boot messages are also recorded to /var/log/messages, and a snapshot of the dmesg just after boot is placed in /var/run/dmesg.boot.
