For your reference, the reason Mark avoided this exact behaviour was
that one now has no way of knowing whether the stash operation worked.
I don't think it matters how noisy stuff is on shutdown.

I wouldn't bother to revert the commit now -- it's a small issue.  but
in future, keep in mind that you should probably contact folks before
changing stuff they've done recently.
