If you need any sophistication at all, you're pretty much stuck with
a commercial spreadsheet.  If KDE is too much overhead, don't even
think of staroffice--although 3.1 might do it.  It's a bit more
stable, but if you get too fancy, sometimes you need to open the files 
with a new version adn save in the old format.

Wingz can crash badly--leaving you unable to recover the file *at all* 
[not that this happened to my gradesheets last fall . . .]

I haven't used offix or aplixware.
