hmmm... downloading/installing gawk-3.0.6 from ftp://ftp.gnu.org doesn't
cause me any problems on Solaris8 or FreeBSD.

Question: does it core dump when you are installing it or does it core dump
when you run it?

I just noticed that the gawk port is version 3.0.6, whilst the
standard awk is gawk version 3.0.4. This might or might not be the
cause of the problem, but may at least be a clue.
