Use text screens if you suspect (or know :) about kernel problems.

Yes.  It's about 150 k lines of code in the Xservers...  By now, the
Xserver must be signalled before the VT can be got back into normal
state.  Obviously, signalling the Xserver won't help in situations
where the kernel stalls, and cannot continue to serve processes.
