Usenet typically works on a "mutually beneficial" paradigm.

If I feed you, you feed me too, and hopefully both parties benefit from
the exchange.  Of course, this assumes that you exchange news with multiple
peers.

If that isn't the case, usually you have to pay someone to feed you news.
