Have you tested your fix ?  I get:

I believe (read: know) the problem here is that patch doesn't work.  
If I copy the version of patch from RELENG_2_2, everything is ok.

If I change all versions of `utils.c' in patch-aa to 
`m3/quake/src/utils.c', patch still doesn't know what's going on.
