In a previous life, I worked at a place were they expected to be able to
restore files after 25 years. We had quite a collection of tape drives.

Just before I left, we had started a data conversion project to convert
the old tapes into newer media. It was getting too hard to maintain the
old tape drivers (and computers, operating systems and backup software)
that had been used over the last 25 years.

My biggest problem with using disk space for backups is that you always
have some pressing need for more disk space (but its just temporary :-)
and your backup disk looks really appealing.
