Well, it does not. Try it on an i386 system.

There is (almost) no problem /building/ www/firefox with gcc48. The
problem is /running/ it, so I'm not sure, why are referring me to a
bug-report describing a /build-/failure. Meanwhile, I rebuilt it with
DEBUG option and, wouldn't you know it, it runs "fine" now -- except for
the copious debug output, of course...

According to this link, 8.x is not EOLed until April of 2014 -- a year
from now...
