Before, I had only installed the 'sys' source package. The missing 'cc1' file is installed with the 'libexec' source pack. incidentally, the delay in posting this was that my HD went FUBAR, and I had scrounge around for a new one and then reinstall before I could do anything else. thanks for all the help!
