Indeed.  That's why I thought these four knobs were a good
first-cut at doing something.  They're helpful, they're
simple, and there's only a few of them.  My opinion of these
particular choices are probably influenced by the fact that
three of the four knobs are things that I myself would have
used at one time or another...

My concern was more directed at Robert musing about adding
lines to every Makefile in the system, trying to tag them
for one thing or another.  That's the kind of thing that I
think we might regret, if we jumped into it without having
more of an explicit game plan.
