I have additional information to add.
The error is encountered when you load the agp module too late
in the boot process (it was being loaded from /usr/local/etc/rc.d)
If the module is loaded via loader.conf, or by entering a pseudo-device
line for it in the kernel configuration, then initialisation appears
to work.

However when you then start X11 the system reboots itself.
These are the last messages in the X11 startup log..
