Did you ever get beyond this? I am getting the same error message (when I attempt to run vmware_config.pl per the INSTALL file instructions). I originally installed vmware2 from /usr/ports. Note that this is on a fairly recent (1/23/01) FreeBSD-4.2-STABLE system.
