The prompt returned immediately. So, I typed portsdb -U and its running. However, I notice there are a number of "make: fatal errors encountered..." and "*** Error code 1: malformed entry: ***" . Is this something to be worried about? On the other hand it looks as though they may have something to do with other language ports (german, french, etc.). And I had the default refuse file under /sup/ in order not to download other language ports. So, this makes me think that it doesn't really matter.
