FreeBSD is VERY concerned about reliability. Where Linux usually runs
all disk I/O async, FreeBSD runs either sync or sync for metadata and
async for data. This greatly reduces the likelihood of a major disk
corruption in the event of a crash or power failure.

See man tuning for a good discussion of the issues. Also turn on
softupdates for all but root (/). If you want to live dangerously,
turn on write cache on your disks, but this presents the possibility
of a real disk disaster.
