I have two identical machines running identical versions of 4-STABLE (same
kernel).

On one machine I get sound out of the card. Out of the other, I don't.
I've had this problem since I first got these machines earlier this year.

 % mpg123 foo.mp3
High Performance MPEG 1.0/2.0/2.5 Audio Player for Layer 1, 2 and 3.
Version 0.59r (1999/Jun/15). Written and copyrights by Michael Hipp.
Uses code from various people. See 'README' for more!

 Can't open /dev/dsp!
 %

On both machines:

 lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  wheel  4 Mar 28 16:38 /dev/dsp@ -> dsp0
 crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 30, 3 Mar 29 14:43 /dev/dsp0

and /dev/sndstat returns:

FreeBSD Audio Driver (newpcm) Mar 28 2001 04:44:53
 Installed devices:
 pcm0: <AudioPCI ES1371> at io 0xa800 irq 9 (1p/1r channels duplex)

Should I assume this is this a hardware problem or is there something I can
do to identify/home-in on the problem?

Here's the dmesg output from one of the machines. The other is identical
with the exception of the MAC address on the NIC.
