I never experienced this.
(N.B. I'm not saying you are wrong, possibly it depends on use case).

In any case, I think the OP's talking about a LAN: in that case I don't 
think speed matters that much and SSH+X11 will give a much better 
experience than VNC or RDP (cfr. one program running remotely vs the 
whole desktop running remotely).
