Hi-

I would be that induhvidual.

I have x86 box at home running current as of last night that
began to behave this way:

FreeBSD bobzilla 4.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 4.0-CURRENT #0: Sun Oct 17 21:45:50 EDT 1999 sto@bobzilla:/usr/src/sys/compile/BOBZILLA i386

ata-pci0: <Intel PIIX4 IDE controller> at device 7.1 on pci0
ata-pci0: Busmastering DMA supported
ata0 at 0x01f0 irq 14 on ata-pci0
ata1 at 0x0170 irq 15 on ata-pci0
ad0: <WDC AC23200L/09.09M08> ATA-4 disk at ata0 as master
ad1: <ST5540A/09.09.01> ATA-? disk at ata1 as slave
acd0: <CD-532E/1.0A> CDROM drive at ata1 as master
ata1-slave: ad_timeout: lost disk contact - resetting
ata1: resetting devices .. done

Once this ad_timeout happened, I was hosed. I had to power
cycle my way out of a shutdown.. and upon reboot, the file
system was completely toast. newfs was my only way out...
fortunately, this was just my /usr/obj directory, so I am not
too concerned about the lost data.

Of course, this could just be a sign of the imminent demise of
this drive.

Hope this helps.
