You shouldn't add that path to LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Instead, run the setup
program from /usr/local/OpenOffice.org1.1.4/setup and select
'Workstation Installation', that will create a ~/OpenOffice.org1.1.4
directory with several links, once of them being soffice. The install
program will also (IIRC) add KDE and Gnome menu entries. If you're not
using either of those desktops you can launch OO.org by executing
~/OpenOffice.org1.1.4/soffice.
