Subject: Sound on sony vaio - Kernel fails to boot
Message-ID: <F145R4UV6rJ8ed7IgAj0000263b@hotmail.com>

I'm having trouble adding sound support to my freebsd (4.5-release) kernel,
my machine is a Sony Vaio PCG-FX602 laptop with a VIA (VT82C686) AC'97 sound
card (which may be running over a pci to isa bus). After i compile support
into the kernel and reboot the machine hangs while booting (after lpt0,
Interrupt-driven port). I think this is because i haven't been able to
include all the address information for the card, and there may be a
conflict (although boot -c, visual, shows none). My origional line looked
like:

device pcm0 at isa? irq 9

I think that including the i/o resource addresses that windows gives me
(running on another partition) may help (possibly using the iomem param).
They are as follows:

pci bus 0, device 7, function 5.
I/O Range 1000-10FF
I/O Range 1C54-1C57
I/O Range 1C50-1C53
IRQ 09

One REALLY strange thing about this was that the first time i re-compiled my
kernel with my pcm0 device, it rebooted fine, i added the device nodes
(snd0) and was able to play cd's, mp3's, etc. But the next time it was
powered up and every recompile since from a kernel with device pcm0 it has
failed to boot and i have had to reboot, unload, and boot kernel.GENERIC.

It has no problem with recompiling and booting the generic kernel, or my
custom kernel (GENERIC2, which removes scsi, raid, some nics and unused usb
devices).

I tried using an oss demo driver (http://www.opensound.com/) which worked,
but has a time limit. Since sound support for my card has been part of
FreeBSD since 4.1.1 (http://www.posi.net/freebsd/drivers/drivers-done.phtml)
i don't much fancy paying for another driver. Prehaps there is another way
to initiate the sound card after the machine has booted ?

I would really appreciate _any_ help with this, i've been trying to fix it
for a couple of months now without any luck.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Oliver.
