There are two ways to go around.

1) FreeBSD 2.2.7 doesn't support the NIC by default, but 2.2.8 DOES.

2) You can get the patch to the kernel from
http://www.jp.FreeBSD.org/~hanai/xl.tgz, and compile it.

I recommand (1).
