Hmmm.  ident should do it, but it doesn't.  Try:

  $ strings /usr/sbin/sendmail | grep version.c
  @(#)version.c   8.8.8.1 (Berkeley) 10/24/97

Maybe somebody else can come up with a more elegant method.
