I would assume that you aren't using the right version of automake. The 
ports were updated for automake and autoconf and you need the legacy 
versions. There are a lot of dependancy changes with 2.2.1. I cleaned 
down to the base versions and built up night before last. Three cpu's 
creating packages did wonders.
