As others have mentioned, you have to have the Smart-UPS, not one of
the other things that APC produces. You also have to have the correct
- non-standard - serial cable.

Personally, I use nut - also in the ports - instead of upsd. It deals
with a variety of different UPS's. The documentation it installs also
covers the serial cable issues pretty thoroughly.
