Did you verify that the IRQ settings are correct?  You can see the
settings the kernel found during setup if you hit the SCROLL LOCK key
after you've entered all your hardware settings.  (This saved me when
I experienced something similar recently)

This page explains it better than I can, though you might to try one
of his other guides if you're using a different version of FreeBSD.
