There is a doc, 'VideoModes.doc' which goes into great detail about your problem and how to fix it. The examples are great. Ooops, I believe the title is: The Hitchhiker's Guide to XFree86 Video Timings and it may be obtained from: http://www.ccil.org/~esr/xconfig/video-modes.html
