Thanks for that suggestion.  You seem to be correct.  I installed
the 2.1.0-Release with the caches disabled and it worked fine....So,..

....I SUPed the 2.1-stable to a working 2.1-release system.  I then built
the kernel and copied it to the system with the 284x Adaptec controller.
With the caches enabled it works just fine.
