When I tried to reproduce the problem recently I noticed that the
system doesn't freeze any more. I'm using XFree86-4.2.0_1,1 now.
However fxtv still crashes at startup, so I would appreciate it,
if someone could look into that.
I also found a much nicer workaround. Put this in your
~/.Xresources:

Fxtv*AnnotFont: -adobe-utopia-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-15
