cat /dev/sndstat to see how the card is configured?
Are you running 2.2.6 with PNP or 2.2.5 with the
PNP patches? Did you configure the card in the
config> at boot time?

Try the Open Sound System from 4Front Technologies. 
It's a nice loadable kernel module and only 
costs $20. www.4front-tech.com. You can get an
eval copy off that page. I use it for all our
machines.
