Odhiambo,
Applixware does install on FreeBSD. I purchased the FreeBSD port of it
(v4.4.2) from http://www.freebsdmall.com for a mere $100 and they sent me
the CD I needed to make everything golden. If you feel the need to use
bloated code, Star Office is an option too. It's in the ports collection,
and is obtainable for a much smaller fee: $0.00. I run it on Solaris, but
still prefer Applixware for my Word/Excel compatibility. Everyone has their
own opinion. This is just my two cents...

Anyone knows if Applixware/StarOffice will compile in FBSD??? Kindly give
me a pointer to the utils you use to view MS Word docs....
