Here's what the xconsole says when the hard drive times out:

wd1: interrupt timeout:
wd1: status 50<seekdone> error 0

The hard drive is a Maxtor 7120AT (130 MB).  I do not think it can do 
multi-block transfers, but the bootup message says it can:
