Communication problem between the CPU and your drive/drive controller.
Physically check cabling. Do you have other drives on the same controller,
and do they work normally? Your controller may be pooched, or your drive
may be pooched. Also, check the output of your power supply--noises are
sometimes the result of power fluctuations from a bad connector. Make sure
you haven't overloaded your P/S. All that failing, it sounds like it's
time for a new drive. IDE is so cheap these days it is sometimes more
effective to replace hardware and ask questions later ;-)
