I updated the xsane port from xsane version 0.82 to 0.84 on the same day
Andrew installed xsane, so he unfortunately got an old version.

xsane 0.84 seems to have a completely rewritten xsane_create_secure_file()
function which removes the file before it creates a new one.

Andrew, I would suggest to update xsane and check if the problem still
exists. If not, the problem report could be closed.
