I, FWIW, have NEVER touched /etc/networks.  Netmasks should be set on a
per-interface basis, so you want /etc/sysconfig's ifconfig lines.

ifconfig_ed0="xxx.yyy.zzz.qqq netmask 255.255.255.0 ..."
