Several others have mentioned where to get the info, but
here it is for the archives.

In .cshrc add:
alias ls colorls -G

and in .xinitrc add (or modify):
sysresources=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/.Xresources

and in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit
add a file .Xresources with the following line:
*customization: -color
