I believe Terry suggested:

   ...set the DISPLAY environment variable so that it uses a
   real network connection, instead of a UNIX domain socket
   (and thus allows the use of the MIT SHM extension).
   E.g., per the previous post:

	setenv DISPLAY `hostname`:0.0

I (personally would try that, and see what effect it had,
before I would dive into a kernel debugger!  Maybe it will
have no effect, but even then you will at least have
eliminated this issue from the discussion.
