Subject: Can't execute Xinit after upgrade to 5.0-Release

Hello list,
I upgraded from 4.7 Stable #5 to 5.0-Release late
today. Everything went good on the upgrade until I
executed xinit. When I did, it said:

Authentication failed - cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?

I am running XFree86 3.3.6 (a video card issue has
kept me from upgrading to 4x so far). I didn't
reconfigure Xserver through sysinstall. Any help would
be appreciated, because until this is fixed, I have to
get online via another OS. Other than this, it was a
smooth upgrade.
thank you,
Eric
