I'll second that, hard configure to whatever mode/media you are using, I
have seen easily 30% performance hits from leaving rtl8139's in auto
mode, and not just on FreeBSD, but obsd, linux etc. they don't handle
auto well at all.  Even 905b 3Com cards get an improvement when I've
hard set the mode/media.
