Is this a loaded question? :-)

malloc in 2.1R is notorious for fragmenting the heap. Two things you
can do to improve the situation are: rebuild X with libgnumalloc, get 
phk's new malloc from -current and rebuild your libc, or build gnumalloc 
into libc.
