There is entry in src/UPDATING:
20000914:
        The new pmtimer device is necessary for laptops.  Failure to
        include the device will cause suspended laptops losing time
        when they resume.  Include
                device          pmtimer
        in your config file and
                hint.pmtimer.0.at="isa"
        to your /boot/device.hints file.
