For the record, this is only the case for 4.x and older systems.  5.0 has
a kthread and does not require usbd for anything but running user-level
attach/detach events.  From a 5.0 system:

  PID  TT  STAT      TIME COMMAND
   21  ??  DWL    0:00.38  (usb0)
  297  ??  DWs    0:05.50 /usr/sbin/usbd
